Port Meadow

About this park

Port Meadow in Oxford offers a wonderful escape to nature, stretching across a vast 136.9 hectares with the River Thames meandering through its heart. This ancient landscape has remained largely unchanged since prehistoric times, making it a truly unique spot for dog walks. You'll find a rich array of wildlife here, including cattle, horses, and various wildfowl, especially during the spring when ducklings abound. There are plenty of walking opportunities, whether you stick to the meadow itself, cross over to the Thames towpath, or explore the neighbouring Burgess Field. The varied terrain includes both dry gravelly areas with limestone grassland flora and southern parts that flood for much of the year, supporting diverse wetland plant life. It's truly a birder's paradise, with spectacular flocks of wildfowl and waders visiting in winter. While dogs are very welcome at Port Meadow, it's crucial to keep them under effective control due to the presence of livestock and wild animals. Please adhere to the Countryside Code to ensure everyone, including our furry friends, enjoys this special site responsibly. If you're looking to make a day of it, there are static picnic benches and BBQs near the Godstow Road entrance, perfect for a post-walk refuel. Access to Port Meadow is straightforward, either via Walton Well Road or Aristotle Lane in the south, or from Godstow and Wolvercote in the north. There are two car parks available: one at the north end off Godstow Road (postcode OX2 8PU for nearby use) and another at the south end off Walton Well Road (charges apply, nearby postcode OX2 6ED).
