About this park
Bradgate Park, near Newton Linford in Leicestershire, is a vast 830-acre medieval deer park offering an exceptional dog walking experience. Dogs are generally welcome, though must be kept on a lead in areas with deer, which comprise a significant portion of the park. With a mix of rugged landscapes, ancient woodlands, rocky outcrops, and the flowing River Lin, there’s plenty of varied terrain to explore, from gentle strolls to more challenging hikes up to Old John. Adjacent Swithland Wood provides an additional 170 acres of ancient woodland, ideal for sniffing adventures. The park boasts stunning historical features, including the ruins of Bradgate House, childhood home of Lady Jane Grey, and ancient geological formations. There are ample opportunities for dogs to stretch their legs, but owners should be mindful of the large herds of red and fallow deer, ensuring dogs are always under close control. Signage throughout the park clearly indicates on-lead zones, particularly around wildlife and sensitive areas. Facilities at Bradgate Park are excellent, with multiple car parks available (charges apply) and accessible toilets. For refreshments, two tearooms offer a chance to refuel after a good walk, with some outdoor seating often available for those with dogs. Bins are routinely placed along popular routes for easy waste disposal, making it a convenient and enjoyable destination for dog owners looking for history, nature, and expansive walks.
