Arthur's Seat
Edinburgh, EH8 8AZ
About this park
Arthur's Seat, a magnificent ancient volcano, dominates Edinburgh's skyline and offers a rugged, wild walking experience right in the heart of the city. While dogs are generally permitted on the trails, it's worth noting the terrain is often steep, rocky, and can be very busy, particularly during peak times, which might be overwhelming for nervous dogs. The winding paths and open hillside provide plenty of varied scenery, from the dramatic ascent to the summit with panoramic city views to gentler slopes and pathways around the base. There are no designated off-lead areas, and given the popularity and potential for livestock (though rare), it's advisable to keep dogs on a lead, especially on narrower paths or when passing other walkers. Facilities directly on Arthur's Seat itself are minimal, so come prepared with water for both yourself and your dog. Parking can be found at various points around Holyrood Park, and public toilets are available near Holyrood Palace. Dog waste bins are not regularly signposted on the ascent trails, so please be prepared to carry your waste off the hill. Despite the lack of specific dog amenities, it remains a beloved spot for energetic dogs and their owners looking for a challenging urban hike.
