Coombe Bissett Down

About this park

Coombe Bissett Down offers a wonderful chalk downland valley experience near Salisbury, boasting sweeping views and a rich diversity of flora and fauna. It's particularly stunning in late May and early June when wildflowers like delicate harebells, bee orchids, and the county's own burnt orchid create a vibrant display. Keep an eye (and ear!) out for yellowhammers, goldfinches, and skylarks. The summer months bring a flurry of butterflies, including the Adonis blue and marbled white, making this a true haven for nature lovers. The reserve has a fascinating history, with evidence of Neolithic to Roman settlements. You can even spot medieval strip lynchetts on the slopes, remnants of ancient grazing practices. Today, hardy Herdwick sheep and Dexter cattle continue the low-intensity grazing that helps maintain this rich ecosystem. Pathways vary in difficulty, so there are options for many, and a tramper route is available from Cranborne Chase. Do note that access might be challenging for pushchairs and wheelchairs on some routes. Parking is available, though limited, so please be considerate of local access for farm machinery and emergency services. Dogs are very welcome but must be kept on a lead at all times to protect the abundant wildlife, especially the ground-nesting birds and grazing animals. With 71 hectares to explore, Coombe Bissett Down is a fantastic spot for a stroll with your four-legged friend, offering a beautiful backdrop to your outdoor adventures.
