About this park
Pen y Fan, located in the Brecon Beacons National Park near Brecon, Powys, offers a strenuous yet rewarding mountain walk for dogs and their owners. This iconic summit, along with its neighbour Corn Du, features well-maintained footpaths amidst breathtaking Welsh mountain scenery. While dogs are welcome, they must be kept on a short lead at all times due to the presence of grazing livestock and to protect local wildlife within this precious habitat. The circular walk to Pen y Fan and Corn Du covers approximately 4 miles (6.4 km) and takes around 3 hours and 30 minutes to complete. The terrain consists of a mix of flat sections, gravel, and rocky paths, with some steep steps near the summit. The views from the top can be spectacular on a clear day, offering panoramic vistas that can stretch as far as the town of Brecon and even Cadair Idris. Parking is available at the Pont ar Daf car park, though spaces can be limited, so public transport is encouraged where possible. While bins may not be readily available along the trail, visitors are asked to bring their own poo bags and take all litter home to help preserve the natural beauty of the area. There are no facilities such as toilets or cafes specifically for dog walkers directly at the trailhead, so come prepared for a proper mountain excursion.
